《诗》云:"瞻彼淇(qi)澳,侵疋⑩。有斐君子(zi),如(ru)切(qie)如磋(cuo),如(ru)琢如磨。瑟兮兮,赫兮暄(xuan)兮。有斐君子(zi),终不(bu)可召猓(guo)""如切(qie)如(ru)磋"者,道(dao)学也。"如琢如磨"者,自修(xiu)也(ye)。"瑟兮(xi)兮(xi)"者,恂(xun)也(ye)。"赫兮(xi)喧兮(xi)"者,威(wei)仪也。"有(you)斐君子,终不可(ke)召"者,道(dao)盛德至(zhi)善,民之(zhi)不(bu)能忘也。《诗(shi)》云(yun):"于戏前王不忘!"君子贤(xian)其贤而亲其亲,小人乐其乐而利(li)其利(li),此以没世(shi)不忘(wang)也。《康诰(gao)》曰:"克明德。"《大甲(jia)》曰:"顾天(tian)之明命。"《帝典(dian)》曰:"克明(ming)峻德。"皆自明也。汤之(zhi)《盘铭》曰:"苟日新(xin),日日新,又(you)日(ri)新。"《康诰》曰(yue):"作新民。"《诗(shi)》曰:"周(zhou)虽旧邦,其命惟新。"是故君子(zi)无所不(bu)用(yong)其极。《诗(shi)》云(yun):"邦畿千里,惟民所止。"《诗(shi)》云:"缗蛮黄鸟,止于丘(qiu)隅。"子曰(yue):"于止,知(zhi)其所止。可以人而不如鸟乎?"《诗》云:"穆穆(mu)文王,于缉熙敬止!"为(wei)人君(jun1),止于仁(ren);为人(ren)臣,止于敬(jing);为人子,止于孝;为(wei)人父,止于慈;与国人交(jiao),止于信。子曰:"听讼(song),吾(wu)犹人也。必也使无讼乎!"无情(qing)者不得(de)尽(jin)其辞,大畏民志。此(ci)谓(wei)知本。
