《诗》云:"瞻彼淇(qi)澳,侵(qin)疋(ya)⑩。有斐君子,如切如磋,如(ru)琢如磨。瑟兮(xi)兮,赫兮暄(xuan)兮。有(you)斐君子(zi),终(zhong)不可召猓(guo)""如切如磋"者(zhe),道学(xue)也。"如琢如磨"者,自修也。"瑟兮兮"者,恂也。"赫(he)兮喧兮"者(zhe),威仪也。"有斐(fei)君子(zi),终不(bu)可召"者,道(dao)盛德至善,民之不能忘也。《诗》云:"于戏(xi)前王不(bu)忘!"君(jun1)子贤其贤(xian)而亲其亲,小人(ren)乐其(qi)乐而利其利,此以没世(shi)不忘(wang)也。《康诰(gao)》曰:"克(ke)明(ming)德。"《大(da)甲》曰:"顾(gu)天(tian)之明命(ming)。"《帝典(dian)》曰:"克明(ming)峻德。"皆自明也(ye)。汤之《盘铭》曰:"苟日新,日日(ri)新,又日(ri)新。"《康诰》曰:"作新(xin)民。"《诗》曰(yue):"周虽旧邦(bang),其命惟(wei)新(xin)。"是故(gu)君子无(wu)所(suo)不用其极。《诗》云:"邦畿千里,惟民所止。"《诗》云:"缗蛮(man)黄鸟(niao),止于丘(qiu)隅。"子曰:"于止(zhi),知(zhi)其所止。可以人(ren)而(er)不如鸟乎?"《诗》云:"穆(mu)穆文(wen)王,于(yu)缉熙(xi)敬(jing)止!"为人(ren)君,止于仁(ren);为(wei)人(ren)臣,止于敬;为人子,止(zhi)于孝;为(wei)人父,止于慈(ci);与(yu)国人(ren)交,止于(yu)信。子曰:"听讼(song),吾犹(you)人也。必也(ye)使(shi)无讼(song)乎!"无(wu)情者不得尽其(qi)辞,大畏民志。此(ci)谓知(zhi)本(ben)。
