《诗》云:"瞻彼淇澳(ao),侵疋⑩。有(you)斐(fei)君子,如切如(ru)磋,如琢(zhuo)如磨。瑟兮兮,赫兮(xi)暄兮。有(you)斐(fei)君子,终不(bu)可召猓""如(ru)切如磋"者(zhe),道(dao)学也。"如琢(zhuo)如磨"者,自修也。"瑟兮兮"者,恂也。"赫兮喧兮(xi)"者,威(wei)仪也。"有斐君(jun1)子,终不可召"者,道盛德至善,民之不能忘(wang)也。《诗(shi)》云:"于戏前(qian)王不忘!"君(jun1)子(zi)贤其贤而(er)亲其亲(qin),小(xiao)人乐(le)其乐而利(li)其利,此以没世(shi)不忘也。《康诰》曰:"克(ke)明(ming)德。"《大甲(jia)》曰:"顾天(tian)之明(ming)命(ming)。"《帝典》曰:"克明(ming)峻德。"皆(jie)自明也。汤之《盘(pan)铭》曰:"苟日新,日(ri)日新,又(you)日(ri)新(xin)。"《康诰》曰:"作新民。"《诗》曰:"周虽旧邦(bang),其(qi)命惟(wei)新(xin)。"是故(gu)君子无所不用其极。《诗(shi)》云:"邦(bang)畿(ji)千里,惟民(min)所止(zhi)。"《诗(shi)》云:"缗蛮(man)黄(huang)鸟(niao),止于丘隅。"子曰:"于止,知其(qi)所止。可以人而(er)不(bu)如鸟(niao)乎?"《诗》云:"穆穆(mu)文王(wang),于缉熙敬(jing)止!"为人君,止于仁;为(wei)人臣,止于敬(jing);为人子,止于孝;为人父,止(zhi)于(yu)慈(ci);与国人(ren)交,止于信。子曰:"听讼,吾犹人也。必(bi)也使无讼乎!"无情者不得尽其(qi)辞,大畏民(min)志。此谓(wei)知本。
